Relay’s AI-automation platform is shutting down, and its founder, Jacob Bank, is moving straight into Google’s Chrome division as the new vice-president of product. The move gives Google a seasoned automation expert just as the company races to turn its browser into a hub for AI agents.

From Zapier-lite to a Closed Door

Relay launched in 2021 with the promise of “Zapier for AI.” The startup built a web-based service that let users string together tasks such as drafting documents, polishing copy and moving items across project-management tools, all driven by large language models. The idea was simple: let an AI do the repetitive work that eats up most employees’ days.

The market, however, has become crowded. Established integration platforms already offer hundreds of connectors, and big cloud providers have been layering AI features onto the same services. Even as Relay added its own models and a modest user base, competitors rolled out similar capabilities at a faster pace. After an initial announcement in July, free users lost access on August 15 and paying customers will be locked out on September 14. The shutdown shows how hard it is for a newcomer to win a foothold when the giants are moving in.

Jacob Bank’s Return to Google

Bank is not a newcomer to Google. After his earlier startup, the scheduling app Timeful, was acquired, he spent more than six years steering product work for Gmail, Calendar and Chat. Those tools are core to Google’s productivity suite, and his experience there gave him a deep understanding of how users interact with web-based workflows.

Now he will lead both product and developer-relations teams for Chrome. In that role, Bank will shape the browser’s roadmap, prioritize feature work and shepherd the community of extensions that power much of Chrome’s ecosystem. His AI-automation background lines up with Google’s broader push to embed its Gemini large language model across every product.

Turning the Browser Into an AI Workspace

Google has been public about making Gemini a “universal assistant,” but the next logical step is to give that assistant a place to act. The browser is already the window through which most people access cloud services, so placing AI agents directly inside Chrome could let users trigger complex workflows without leaving the page they’re on.

Bank described Chrome as “a perfect place to collaborate with agents.” That phrasing hints at a shift from the current “optional assistant” model—where a chat window sits on the side of a page—to a more proactive system that can read, write and move data across tabs, fill forms, summarize articles and even launch multi-step processes in the background. For developers, the implication is a new set of APIs that let extensions become “agents” capable of autonomous actions, potentially reducing the need for separate automation platforms.

What’s at Stake

  • Google’s competitive edge. If Chrome becomes the default environment for AI-driven productivity, Google may lock users deeper into its ecosystem. Competing browsers would need comparable agent frameworks or risk losing market share among power users and enterprises.
  • Enterprise workflow vendors. Companies that have built businesses around integration platforms could see a portion of their market migrate to a browser-centric model, accelerating consolidation in the AI-productivity space.
  • User privacy and data control. Embedding agents that can read and write across sites raises questions about data handling. Google will need to provide transparent controls; otherwise, privacy advocates may push back.
  • Developer community. Extensions have traditionally been limited to sandboxed actions. Expanding their capabilities could attract new talent but also increase the risk of malicious extensions. Balancing power and security will be a key test for Chrome’s roadmap.

Counterpoint: More Than a Talent Grab?

Some observers argue that hiring a single executive, even one with a strong track record, does not guarantee a breakthrough. Chrome’s architecture is mature, and integrating deep AI functionality may require changes that affect performance, battery life and compatibility with existing web standards. Moreover, the browser market is already fragmented; users on mobile devices may be less inclined to adopt new AI-centric workflows if they perceive added complexity.
